Postdoc position: microtechnology and optical fiber sensors


Project: Small but many: scalability of align-and-shine fabrication in fiber-top technology

VU University Amsterdam is one of the leading institutions for higher education in Europe. It is part of international science networks and collaborates with many major universities throughout the world. The Faculty of Sciences consists of four departments; Physics and Astronomy, Informatics, Mathematics, and Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences with 600 employees including researchers, lecturers, full- and part-time professors. The faculty offers 10 bachelor and 12 master programs and has over 1600 students.
Our group is part of the Biophotonics and Medical Imaging group and of the Institute of Lasers, Life and Biophotonics (LaserLaB) Amsterdam. Five years ago we have pioneered a new technology (fiber-top technology) that has numerous commercial applications. The technology has been recently licensed to a startup company (Optics11) that is bringing our ideas to market.

Project description. The aim of the project is to demonstrate that one can manufacture MEMS on optical fibers (fiber-top technology) with a cost effective fabrication process (align-and-shine photolithography) that adapts well to series production. The project spans from the design of the machine that will make the fabrication possible to the investigation and optimization of all the manufacturing steps.
Requirements. Candidates must have a PhD in Physics or Engineering (or equivalent), and possibly some experience with micromachining (photolithography, film deposition, wet etching) and LabView.
Further particulars. The appointment is for a period of 1 year.
Salary. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel.
